On Sunday, August 9, contract workers in phases 20 and 21 of the Asaluyeh Special Economic Zone stopped work to hold a three-hour silent protest. The workers ended the stoppage after officials promised to pay their unpaid wages.

Labour activists in the Asaluyeh Special Economic Zone have said that the protest was held by contract workers demanding four months’ unpaid wages. The protest began around 8am and ended after three hours, when officials promised to pay the workers’ wages by the end of the week.

Between 500 and 800 workers took part in the protest which brought work in the workshops to a standstill. They are employed by four contracting companies in the fields of piping, support, welding and electrics in oil installations and refinery projects of phases 20 and 21 of the Asaluyeh zone.
