Dorud Cast Iron and Steel workers’ strike: Day 12

01Oct15

The workers of the Dorud Cast Iron and Steel factory, in Lorestan Province, went on strike on September 19 demanding payment of three and a half months’ unpaid wages. The plant’s more than 100 workers are also concerned that their boss may be trying to close down the mill.

On the twelfth day of the strike, September 30, the workers said: “Apparently last week there was an unfinished meeting in Dorud town’s government building that was to address the status of the plant. The employer suggested that until the mill’s status has been clarified the workers should be place under the protection of unemployment insurance.”

The workers are worried that introducing them to the Iranian regime’s Social Security Organisation’s unemployment insurance system prepares the ground for Dorud Cast Iron and Steel factory’s closure. They said: “It seems that the Social Security Organisation representative at the meeting did not accept this proposal because of the employer’s one billion six hundred toman debt” ($534,100).

These workers also say that so far, even at start of the twelfth day of the strike, members of the Islamic Labour Council of the factory have failed to fulfil their trade purpose and function properly.

The Dorud Cast Iron and Steel workers say: “Because of the passive behaviour of the Dorud Cast Iron and Steel’s trade association’s members, [they] are also calling for the re-election of the trade association.”

On September 27, the ninth day of the Dorud Cast Iron and Steel workers’ strike, the town council had met to address the crisis at this factory.
