Condemnation of the killing of workers at the Mitsubishi plant in Venezuela

Iranian Workers’ Solidarity Network (IWSN) condemns the police assassination of Venezuelan trade unionists Pedro Suarez of the Mitsubishi plant and José Marcano of the Macusa factory.

The activists of IWSN are outraged that in today’s Venezuela three judges could issue an order of eviction against the workers despite the fact that it was the Mitsubishi Motor Company (MMC) which had broken the law by sacking 135 subcontracted workers! This order gave the police of Anzoátegui state judicial cover to kill and maim unarmed workers who had been occupying the MMC factory since 22 January.

We support the struggle of the Mitsubishi workers and all Venezuelan trade unionists for better pay, conditions and rights. The current occupation of the Mitsubishi plant is the logical progression of the struggle by workers of this factory to defend their workmates and to have full control of the fruits of their labour.

We also applaud the work of trade unionists and other activists outside Venezuela, particularly the Hands Off Venezuela campaign, in organising solidarity action in support of the struggles of the Venezuelan working class.  Their activities have helped to defend the gains made by workers during the past decade from attacks by their internal and external enemies.

We demand that a thorough and independent investigation, which must naturally involve workers’ representatives, be opened and all those responsible for these political assassinations are brought to justice.

Long live the Venezuelan workers’ struggles!
Long live international solidarity!
