Alireza Saghafi arrested by intelligence officers

As part of the widespread arrests of activists in Iran during the past few days Alireza Saghafi was arrested on Monday, February 1, 2010. He is a member of the Iranian Writers’ Association and a labour rights activist who was arrested on May Day 2009 in Tehran’s Laleh Park.

Alireza Saghafi was summoned to appear at an Intelligence Ministry office in Tehran’s Saba Street and arrested when he turned up for questioning. He then had to accompany the intelligence officers while they searched his home at night with his wife and children in there. They confiscated his laptop and some documents.

Mr Saghafi has been summoned by the Revolutionary Court many times and charged with attending the gathering in Laleh Park on International Labour Day. Around 150 workers and labour rights activist were arrested on May Day 2009, including Alireza Saghafi and his son Mohsen.

This arrest is part of the Iranian regime’s preparations for the thirty-first anniversary of the revolution on February 11, 2010.
