Kurdish reporter to serve sentence in internal exile

Kaveh (Davood) Javanmard, a reporter on the Kerefto weekly in Sanandaj (Iranian Kurdistan), has been transferred from Sanandaj prison to Maragheh. This civil activist was given a two year custodial sentence to be served in Maragheh prison, in East Azerbaijan province. This effectively condemns him to serve his sentence in internal exile bringing further pressure on him and his family. Kaveh Javanmard has already served a year in jail and has now been transferred to Maragheh to complete his term.

Other charges against this journalist include "actions against national security", for which he had been sentenced to two years in prison. Mr Javanmard is appealing against this sentence and his case has now been referred to the appeal court of Kurdistan province.

The Iranian regime often makes Kurdish civil and labour activists serve their prison terms far away from their home town.
